Looking for ideas to build a holiday program? Check out these tips from HCM artist Sharone Stevenson, and check out her pieces below.
We are all now in the exciting, but sometimes difficult process, of making up our program for Christmas music. Most of us wonder what we could do to make our performance more interesting this year, and where to find new pieces of suitable music for the occasion. Relax! Help is on the way! Maybe what I do will give you some new ideas to spark up your selection.
First and foremost, we need to inspire the listeners and to guide the audience/congregation to actually ‘listen’ to our beautiful harp music. I find that the way to do this is to intersperse well-know carols with my original inspired music. You’ll find that it fits perfectly and has a powerful healing ambience and lifts the spirit of all who hear it.
Begin by choosing any of my solo pieces, all of which are suitable with Christmas Carols. I have made up a sample program for you called “Christmas Medley.” Maybe it will inspire you with ideas as to how to go about this. The Medley begins with gentle, yet quietly powerful pieces, then rises to joyous pieces, and then reverts to meditative pieces continuing to the finale. By now, the audience/congregation will be caught up in an atmosphere of peace and harmony that you have created through the music you chose, and your presentation. When your performance is completed, silently lower your hands into your lap, and calmly look directly at the audience, and you will see what I mean. Retain your dignity. My music touches the souls of all who hear it, and what better time to do this than during this most sacred and peaceful season of the year.
