Notes from the Arranger
“Love at Home” is a beloved American hymn. The composer, John Hugh McNaughton, was born in Caledonia, New York where there is a monument that stands in his honor for his contributions to principles and truth. Sir Henry Bishop’s “Home Sweet Home” has a long and famous career since it was first sung in England in 1823. In America it became very popular during the Civil War. It has also been used in cinema. For instance, in the “Wizard of Oz” the melody is played in counterpoint to “Over the Rainbow” in the final scene as Dorothy tells her family “there is no place like home.”
