Additional Notes from the Arranger
This beautiful Air is attributed to Bach because it is in the Notebook for Anna Magdelena, but the melody has been discovered to be from a 1718 Opera by Gottfried Heinrich Stolzel, Bach’s contemporary. Here is an English translation for the title and first words of the Air, “When thou art near, I go with joy, To death and to my rest.”
