Notes from the Arranger:
This medley of two Celtic airs, “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose,” and “The Riddle Song” is suitable for the concert stage, for weddings or as background music. There are key changes and pedal changes, but the tempo is moderately slow so that the pedal changes are quite manageable. Legend has it tht Robert Burns, Scotland’s national bard, wrote “My Love is Like a Red, Red Rose” after hearing it sung by a country girl. It first appeared in print in 1794, in Petro Urbani’s Scotts Songs, set to an original tune. “The Riddle Song” also known as “I Gave My Love a Cherry” is descended from a 15th century English song, which was carried by settlers to the American Appalachians. “The Twelfth of Never,” a popular song recorded by Johnny Mathis, is based upon this tune.
This piece was performed by Christa Grix for the 2010 American Harp Society conference in Tacoma, Washington.
