Notes from the composer:
Friedrich Silcher (June 27, 1789, Schnait, Germany–August 26, 1860,Tubingen, Germany) is not only considered the father of the German folk song, he is also the founding father of the German choir tradition. His songs about the “Loreley” and the “Linden Tree” are indispensable treasures of German culture. And this is why I chose to arrange these songs for contemporary “easy listening.” Some purist traditionalists may disapprove: I nevertheless believe that it bespeaks the timeless quality of these songs that that a modern attire will suit them well. A quotation from the German National Anthem, using slightly off-centre jazz chords towards the end of the piece, tops of this musical capriccio. Anything goes!
