This folk song has a romantic story associated with it. A general returned from war to discover that his wife had contracted small pox, leaving her so disfigured that she would not be seen. He asked Thomas Moore to write the words which are sung to this melody telling her that “thou wilt still be adored, as this moment thou art, let thy loveliness fade as it will.” And that “the heart that has truly loved never forgets, but as truly loves on to the close,” likening his love to the sunflower that always follows the sun.
